Iron & Steel Assessment Board

The Iron & Steel Assessment Board is the technical and certification arm of the Steel Consumer Forum (SCF), created to ensure that every tonne of steel reaching consumers is safe, reliable and future‑ready. It connects product quality with safety, environmental performance and international standards so that Indian steel can be trusted in both domestic and global markets.

Purpose and Scope

The primary purpose of the Iron & Steel Assessment Board is to set, verify and continuously upgrade quality benchmarks for iron and steel products and processes.

Its scope covers:

  • Long products, flat products, structural steel, TMT bars, pipes, and other commonly used steel products

  • Assessment of plant practices, testing facilities and adherence to Indian and international standards

  • Coordination with national quality and standards bodies wherever relevant

Through this, the Board acts as an independent, consumer‑centric layer of assurance over and above regulatory requirements.

Key Functions

The Iron & Steel Assessment Board performs four core certification and assessment functions.

  • Quality Assessment Certification

    • Verifies chemical composition, mechanical properties, and manufacturing consistency.

    • Ensures products meet or exceed applicable codes and project specifications.

  • Safety and Security Assessment Certification

    • Examines whether steel used in buildings, bridges, infrastructure and industrial applications is fit for purpose.

    • Promotes safer design, storage, handling and use of steel across the supply chain.

  • Low Emission Certification

    • Encourages producers to adopt low‑carbon processes, efficient energy use and better waste management.

    • Links certification to measurable reductions in emissions and environmental impact.

  • International Standard Certification Support

    • Helps producers align with global norms and certifications required for export markets.

    • Reduces disputes and rejections in international trade by improving documentation and traceability.

Together, these functions help consumers, builders and project owners choose steel that is not just cheaper, but genuinely better and safer.

Working Methodology

The Board works through structured audits, sampling and digital records.

Typical activities include:

  • Periodic plant assessments covering raw material control, process stability, testing and calibration

  • Independent sampling and testing of steel products where required

  • Maintaining digital quality records that can be referred to in case of disputes, accidents or export compliance checks

By combining on‑ground inspections with data‑driven monitoring, the Board builds long‑term trust between producers, traders and consumers.

Link with Consumers and Legal Protection

The certifications issued by the Iron & Steel Assessment Board are directly useful to consumers and to the Steel Legal Authority.

They:

  • Provide objective evidence in case of quality disputes or structural failures

  • Strengthen the position of genuine consumers in mediation and legal proceedings

  • Encourage producers and traders to maintain consistent quality to avoid reputational and legal risk

In this way, the Board is not only a technical body but a crucial pillar of consumer protection in the iron and steel sector.
